Anime Expectations: Re:Creators

Re:Creators is an original anime without any background media, which will begin airing in Japan for the spring anime season in April, 2017. It is directed by Ei Aoki, founder of the animation studio Troyca which is also animating the anime. The anime will have been written by both Ei Aoki and Rei Hiroe. A manga adaption is to be released starting roughly early-to-mid 2017.

Re:Creators is about the characters inside of a story, and how they view the world outside of the story. As humans who possess the ability to create stories, we may think that we have total control over the story’s characters, but what if those characters could feel things that weren’t written? What if, by creating these characters, we are creating another reality with living people? How would we appear to such characters?

There is very little information available about this Re:Creators, seeing as it is an original story which did not previous begin as a manga, light novel, or game. Without any material to go off of, I’m writing solely based on what I know about the creators of this title! That being said, without further ado, let’s take a look!

Studio Troyca has animated Re:Creators for this upcoming anime season. Studio Troyca was created by Ei Aoki, an anime director who used to work for AIC (Anime International Company), and Ufotable. In his career he has directed a total of six anime series, including Ga-Rei Zero, Fate/Zero, and Aldnoah.Zero, as well as two anime movies including the first Kara no Kyoukai movie. Ei Aoki both directed and worked as a writer for Re:Creators. Rei Hiroe, the mangaka behind Black Lagoon, worked on the writing for Re:Creators as well.

Re:Creators is aimed at a seinen (adult male) demographic, for which both Ei Aoki and Rei Hiroe are experienced in creating for. I have no doubts about them hitting their targets in that regard. As for the genres, Re:Creator is said to be an action/sci-fi/mecha anime. Both Aoki and Hiroe are experienced in the action genre, and Aoki is experienced in sci-fi and mecha as well. The writers are knowledgeable and experienced in these settings, and they’re both known for creating successful works, I have no worries whatsoever about the execution of this anime.

The theme of written characters coming to life brings me back to the anime Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito, or YamiBou for short, which originated as an erotic visual novel. I watched this anime a decade ago, and it had a similar theme, but focused more on the concept of jumping through various stories to find a specific person who had run away. In both Re:Creators and YamiBou, it seems, the outside world has a great impact on the inside world of a story. While I enjoyed YamiBou, I cannot compare the theme to Re:Creators too much, as they do have their distinct differences. However, I do expect a much more in depth and consistent story from Re:Creators.

From the PV, we can see some pretty nice artwork, and a nod to the fans with a little otaku culture. The action is well-animated, and the characters each look unique when compared to one another, making for a great line of protagonists. The upbeat music that plays at the end is the opening theme “gravityWall” by Sawano Hiroyuki.

  1. Thank you for commenting! Actually you are the first person to comment on my new blog here so I am so happy! 😀

I used to blog regularly over a year ago on a different site, but I felt that my writing was not very good and I stopped. I only recently decided to give it another go and make this blog. ^^
